SEND A PEN!

Since more than 30 years the indigenous tribes Macuxi, Wapixana, Ingarikó, Taurepang und Patamona keep fighting for a landtitle to their territory, which covers some 1.6 million hectars. This area in the northern part of the Brazilian State of Roraima is called Raposa/Serra do Sol (see map). For its full recognition (homologation) it only takes the signature of the president.

To make sure it is not a lacking pen preventing the signature, the indians' organisation CIR asked the international supporter community to send pens or other writing utilities to the country's president. This call for action so far is followed by organisations in the US and in Germany.

Time is pressing: A group of people opposing the landright process and idea about indians owning land have mobilized a lot in the last weeks and gained some attention against the indigenous peoples' struggle - partly proposing solutions that contradict the country's own constitution.

The main uncertainity still is, how resistant President Lula will be against all the campaigning from the group opposing - which is formed by a number of very influencial politicians and business man. In order not to allow the opposition all public attention and space, the indian communities sent their representatives to Brasilia - this time 20 men and women. As the fligths are comparably expensive, the organisation asks for financial support.

It is not only about money: We urge you to make use of the information here, download the file and print the stickers, attach one sticker to a pen and send this accompanied with the card to the relevant Brazilian embassy in your country.

Advice for sending the pen

We suggest to send the pen to the embassy of Brazil in your country, as overseas-postage is far more expensive. The embassy's address can be found in the web - if you have trouble, we can help. The embassy should forward the pens to Brasil as soon as they've collected the ones coming in.

You may want to consider to choose a pen, which a) is working and b) which after packing does not get too thick costing extra postage (in Germany the packed pen should not exceed 10mm height).

Best find out at a post office on how much the postage will be - in Germany it is 1 EUR.
Please take an envelop strong enough to hold the pen - even if it may be handled a bit rude on the way to it's receiver - maybe you fix the pen with a tape on a card in the envelop.
The address may look like:

To the president of the Republic of Brasil
Luis InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva
c/o Embassy of Brasil
to forward to the president
